India Finished Fourth at Aichi-Nagoya; Top Three Sports Accounted for 48 of 85 Medals
India finished fourth at Aichi-Nagoya with 85 medals. Athletics, shooting and archery contributed 48; India and Uzbekistan tied on golds, with the table showing India ahead on silver and bronze.

India finished fourth in the final medal standings at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. The official event table and the Indian Olympic Association’s post-Games report list the same result.
An r/indiansports thread followed India’s move into fourth after the men’s hockey gold. That discussion reflects the subreddit’s readers; the final rank comes from the official table.
India and Uzbekistan tied on golds
The official table shows China first, followed by Japan and South Korea. India and Uzbekistan each had 21 golds. India’s silver total was two higher and its bronze total thirteen higher than Uzbekistan’s; the table ranks India fourth and Uzbekistan fifth.
The displayed order is consistent with comparing silver medals after a tie on golds, but the event table page does not state a formal tie-break rule. That reading is an inference from the rows, not a confirmed official rule.
The Games ran from September 19 to October 4 across Aichi and Nagoya, with 43 sports at 54 venues. The IOA reported a 503-member Indian contingent and said 78 medals came within the Olympic sports programme.
Athletics led India’s campaign
Athletics delivered 24 medals, the largest contribution from any sport. India’s women’s 4x400-meter relay team—Kiran Pahal, M.R. Poovamma, Prachi Choudhary and Vithya Ramraj—won gold. Gulveer Singh earned three individual medals: two silver and one bronze.
Sawan Barwal ended India’s 44-year wait for an Asian Games marathon medal. Baranica Elangovan became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games pole-vault medal. The IOA report lists those results alongside the relay and Gulveer’s medals.
Shooting and archery added 24
Shooting produced 15 medals. Neeru Dhanda won gold in individual trap and mixed-team trap, then added a team silver. The IOA also names Elavenil Valarivan, Himanshu Dhillon, Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Esha Singh among the shooters who contributed across rifle, pistol and shotgun events.
Archery contributed nine medals, including five golds. Jyothi Surekha Vennam and India’s compound teams contributed to the gold tally. Kumkum Mohod won women’s individual recurve gold, and the Indian women’s recurve team also finished first. The IOA recognized Mohod as the Games’ outstanding female athlete. Together, athletics, shooting and archery accounted for 48 medals.

Four team golds had decisive scores
India’s women beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the women’s cricket final on September 22 after scoring 216/3. Smriti Mandhana made 79 from 45 balls. The ICC recap records the result.
On October 2, India’s women’s hockey team beat China 1-0. Lalremsiami scored in the 10th minute, and goalkeeper Savita saved a penalty stroke. The win ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games women’s hockey gold and secured direct qualification for Los Angeles 2028, according to Hockey India.
India’s men retained their hockey title with a 5-1 win over Malaysia on October 3. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice. The Hockey India report says the team also secured its direct LA28 place. In men’s cricket, India scored 211/6 and beat Pakistan by 19 runs in the final the same day, the ICC reported.
Other sports rounded out the table
Boxing added three golds through Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal, plus three bronzes. The IOA described it as India’s most successful Asian Games boxing campaign by gold-medal count. Wrestling produced six medals, with golds for Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal. It was India’s best Asian Games wrestling haul since 1962; Sehrawat became the country’s first Asian Games champion in the men’s 57-kilogram category.
Squash contributed five medals, including singles silvers for Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh. Anahat became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games women’s singles silver. In golf, Pranavi Urs won individual women’s gold, the first Indian woman to do so at the Asian Games, and the women’s team took silver. Sailing added three medals.
The IOA also recorded bronze medals for the men’s badminton team, the men’s double-sculls rowing pair of Satnam Singh and Salman Khan, and mixed-doubles table-tennis partners Manush Shah and Diya Chitale. Mirabai Chanu’s silver in women’s 49-kilogram weightlifting was India’s first Asian Games medal in weightlifting since 1998.
