Bergs Beats Alcaraz in Shanghai, and Zverev Clinches the 2026 Year-End No. 1
Zizou Bergs, ranked 39th, beat second seed Carlos Alcaraz 7-5, 7-6(4) at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Monday, and the tournament's report says the defeat means Alexander Zverev will finish 2026 as the ATP Year-End No. 1. Eight players reached the fourth round on Monday, and four quarter-final places are decided on Tuesday.

Zizou Bergs beat Carlos Alcaraz at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Monday, and the result settled who finishes the men's year at No. 1. Bergs, the No. 39 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, beat the second seed 7-5, 7-6(4) in two hours and three minutes to reach the fourth round, and the tournament's report on the match states that Alcaraz's defeat means Alexander Zverev will finish 2026 as the ATP Year-End No. 1. That would make Zverev the first German to end a season in the position.
How Bergs won the second set
Bergs broke Alcaraz three times and won 37 of 47 points behind his first serve, 79 per cent, according to Infosys ATP Stats. The 27-year-old Belgian served for the match at 5-4 in the second set and lost the game. Alcaraz, the World No. 3, then forced a tie-break, where Bergs led 3/1, double-faulted to give one opening back, and won three points from 4/4.
The win was the biggest of Bergs's career by ranking and levelled his head-to-head series with Alcaraz at 1-1. He won his first ATP Tour title earlier this year on the grass of Eastbourne, and he reached his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in Shanghai a year ago.
"This is something that has been very tough for me," Bergs said. "I often have too much respect for these guys, which is part of my culture and I'm proud of that. But it gets a little bit in the way when you have to play them. I had a great moment here last year against Djokovic where I was definitely playing the name, not the guy."
"To have this moment, for me it is a little bit of a relief," he said. "I feel like now I really can win against these guys."
What the Shanghai result settled for Zverev
The tournament's report says Bergs's win "simultaneously ensured that Alexander Zverev will finish 2026 with ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours". Zverev is the current World No. 2.
His season includes the Roland Garros and US Open titles, another Wimbledon final, and on Sunday a 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3 win over Quentin Halys that was his 60th tour-level victory of 2026. He has reached 60 wins in a season twice before, in 2018 and 2024, and he did not face a break point in the two-hour, 17-minute match against Halys. Those 60 wins lead the tour this season, ahead of Jannik Sinner and Frances Tiafoe on 44, Daniil Medvedev on 42, Alex de Minaur on 41 and Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton and Rafael Jodar on 40.
"I feel like this year I've been picking my places where I want to peak, and I feel like I did that quite well," Zverev said. "I won two Grand Slams and peaked at the right moments and made another final at Wimbledon."
The numbers in the ranking lists
The ATP singles list for the week of 5 October 2026, the most recent published before this week's play, has Jannik Sinner first on 11,000 points, Zverev second on 9,720 and Alcaraz third on 5,560, with Shelton fourth on 4,680 and Felix Auger-Aliassime fifth on 3,890. Bergs is 39th.
The year-end honour is decided at the end of the season, and the tournament's report treats Monday's result as the point at which Zverev secured it.
Monday's other third-round results
Eight players reached the fourth round on Monday, four on Stadium Court and four on Grandstand 2.
On Stadium Court, fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 4-6, 6-1; Stefanos Tsitsipas rallied past 11th seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 6-3; Bergs beat Alcaraz; and 15th seed Tommy Paul beat the defending champion Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-2.
On Grandstand 2, 20th seed Casper Ruud beat 14th seed Learner Tien 6-4, 7-6(3); 12th seed Rafael Jodar beat 22nd seed Jiri Lehecka 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4; fifth seed Daniil Medvedev beat the qualifier Dalibor Svrcina 6-2, 6-3; and Botic van de Zandschulp beat eighth seed Arthur Fils 7-5, 6-4.
Seeds went out at No. 2, No. 8, No. 11, No. 14, No. 17 and No. 22, while Tsitsipas, Bergs and van de Zandschulp advanced with no seeding beside their names.
Jodar, who is 20, is 40-16 in his first full season on the ATP Tour and has reached the fourth round at a Masters 1000 event five times this season. Tsitsipas ended a 16-month title drought in Gstaad in July and is 7-9 against top-20 opponents in 2026, after going 0-5 in those matches last year.
What Tuesday's fourth round decides
Four quarter-final places come from Stadium Court on Tuesday. Ninth seed Alex de Minaur plays 26th seed Karen Khachanov from noon, followed by Arthur Gea against 13th seed Jakub Mensik. In the night session, top seed Zverev plays 19th seed Alexander Bublik not before 6 p.m. local time, with Hubert Hurkacz against 25th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to follow.
Zverev trails Bublik 1-3 in career meetings, although they have not played since meeting on grass in Halle in 2023. "I think the head-to-head matchup is a bit irrelevant if it's more than three years ago," Zverev said. Bublik reached the fourth round with a third-set tie-break win over Brandon Nakashima on Sunday.
De Minaur retired from his Beijing semi-final against Novak Djokovic with a groin injury, received a walkover in his opening match in Shanghai and had five days between matches before beating Rei Sakamoto in the third round. Gea is in the fourth round in his ATP Masters 1000 debut after upsetting Shelton. Mensik is a former Miami Open champion. Hurkacz, the 2023 champion in Shanghai, has served 50 aces in three matches, 13 of them in a straight-sets win over Djokovic in the second round, and Davidovich Fokina edged Tiafoe in a third-set tie-break late on Sunday.

Bergs's next opponent
Bergs plays Paul, who beat the defending champion Vacherot 6-4, 6-2 on Monday.
