Trey Kaufman-Renn Joins Kansas Under an Eligibility Injunction
Kansas announced the former Purdue forward joined its 2026-27 team. An Indiana court injunction currently allows him to play, but the order’s text was not public in the reporting reviewed and his eligibility could still be challenged.

Kansas announced Monday, October 19, that former Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn had joined its men’s basketball team. Coach Bill Self said Kaufman-Renn had enrolled and was practicing by Sunday, October 18. The team said he will take the roster spot of freshman Grant Mordini, who suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury in practice last month.
The roster addition comes under an Indiana court injunction. The Lawrence Journal-World’s KU Sports reported that a judge in Clark County granted Kaufman-Renn a preliminary injunction on October 9, allowing him to be eligible for the 2026-27 season. KU Sports said the order’s text was not publicly available and that the NCAA had not appealed as of October 19. The outlet also reported his eligibility could be challenged later in the season, so the ruling is not a final decision on the case.
Why the season count is unusual
Kaufman-Renn spent five seasons at Purdue but competed in four. He redshirted in 2021-22 after a knee injury. Kansas calls him a fifth-year player for 2026-27; headlines describing a “sixth year” refer to an additional year after five years enrolled, not a sixth season already played.
Kansas lists his 2025-26 averages as 14.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, with 57.8% shooting from the field. The school announcement confirms the roster move and Bill Self’s statement. The KU Sports report explains the injunction and the unresolved legal status.
