UEFA lists Lamine Yamal with the most Champions League goals scored before a player’s 19th birthday: 11. Its October 13 profile also records 12 goals and 13 assists in 35 appearances. The 11-goal mark is an age-cutoff record for goals in this competition; it does not combine assists or count every tournament Yamal has played.

The timing can be confusing because Barcelona’s 4-1 comeback at Galatasaray came on October 13, the same day UEFA updated its player profile. Yamal assisted two goals and was Player of the Match, but he did not score. The match added context to his current totals; it did not create the before-19 scoring record.

What UEFA’s 11-goal record counts

UEFA’s records page lists Yamal first for Champions League goals scored before his 19th birthday, with Kylian Mbappé next at 10. The cutoff is the player’s birthday, not the end of a season: only goals scored before turning 19 count in this row. Assists are excluded, as are goals in domestic leagues, cups and international tournaments.

The appearance figures matter too. UEFA’s age-based table, last updated September 9, lists Yamal’s 11 goals in 33 appearances before 19 and Mbappé’s 10 in 15. That is a cumulative record, not a goals-per-game comparison. It says who had the most goals by the cutoff, not who scored at the faster rate. The different number of chances also means the headline figure alone cannot describe how either player performed in each match.

A second age boundary helps explain why “Yamal’s record” can mean more than one thing. UEFA lists five Champions League goals before 18 for Yamal, then 11 before 19. Its September 9 table also had him at 12 goals before 20, compared with Mbappé’s 13. Those are separate cumulative cutoffs: Yamal leads the before-19 list, while Mbappé leads the before-20 list. UEFA’s newer October 13 player profile shows Yamal still at 12 goals, now across 35 matches after the Galatasaray appearance. That profile is one appearance newer than the September table and does not change the 11-goal before-19 record.

How his Champions League record developed

Yamal made his competition debut for Barcelona on September 19, 2023, as a 68th-minute substitute in a 5-0 win over Antwerp. He was 16. UEFA says his first Champions League goal came a year later, in his second campaign, when he equalised in a 2-1 defeat at Monaco on September 19, 2024.

The October 13 profile now gives him 2,734 minutes, 12 goals and 13 assists over 35 matches. UEFA’s goal breakdown says all 12 goals came with his left foot, including three penalties; eight were at home and four away. He has yet to score with his right foot or head in the competition. These details describe the current 12-goal career total, while the 11-goal record uses the narrower before-19 cutoff.

UEFA also lists several age-based appearance and match records. Yamal was the competition’s youngest starter at 16 years and 83 days. He became the youngest player to reach 10 appearances at 16 years and 278 days, 20 at 17 years and 270 days, 25 at 18 years and 100 days, and 30 at 18 years and 240 days. The same page lists him as the youngest player to score and assist in one Champions League game, aged 17 years and 241 days, and the youngest scorer in a semi-final, aged 17 years and 291 days. These are distinct milestones; they should not be folded into his goal-count record.

What happened at Galatasaray

Galatasaray took the lead through Aleksei Batrakov. João Cancelo equalised before half-time. After the break, Yamal set up Fermín López’s header and Anthony Gordon’s finish shortly afterwards. Karim Adeyemi added Barcelona’s fourth, and UEFA named Yamal Player of the Match.

UEFA’s match recap credits him with both assists. Its player profile lists no goal for him against Galatasaray, so the game did not raise his 12-goal total. The assists fit the 13-assist career figure in the updated profile, while the 11 goals before 19 remain a separate historical count.

The useful distinction is simple: 11 is Yamal’s Champions League goal record before 19; 12 is his current career total after 35 appearances; 13 is his current assist total. The Galatasaray result explains why the profile was in the news, but UEFA’s age-based tables are the source for the record and its statistical basis.
