What Season 5 changed on October 6

Overwatch's Season 5, "A Grim Doctrine," went live on October 6, 2026, and the patch moved a damage hero into the support role. Sombra now heals, her old Hack ability has been removed, and Roadhog's secondary fire has been replaced.

Blizzard published two documents for the launch. The Season 5 announcement covers the hero, the map and the season calendar. The October 6 patch notes carry the numbers, including every projectile size and hit volume that changed.

Doctrine joins as the newest support

Doctrine moves lifeforce between the two teams. His Eternal Scepter heals allies and damages enemies from mid to long range, and his mechanical bat-like drones give the team healing plus extra attack speed. Infuse makes his other abilities stronger on demand. The ultimate redistributes life: allies gain overhealth while enemy maximum health is limited.

Blizzard was already trimming him on day one. His ultimate cost rose by 8 percent, the Transfusion major perk converts half as much damage into healing, Invigorating Drones gives 30 percent attack speed instead of 35, and Shrouded Momentum lost its critical hit immunity while its cooldown went from 7 seconds to 8. The developer comment says Doctrine was generally well received during the trial weekend but was overperforming relative to other supports.

Sombra moves to support and loses Hack

Blizzard calls this one of the biggest changes it has ever made to an existing hero. Sombra keeps the hacker identity and applies it to healing instead.

Her old Hack ability, Virus and the Opportunist passive are removed. Hotfix can still hack health packs and most enemy deployables without spending a Hotfix charge, on a separate six-second cooldown. She gains Hotfix, a healing secondary-fire ability that can be used while stealthed; it temporarily reveals her without breaking stealth. Cyberspace heals allies in a zone while applying Weaken, a new status effect that halves the target's own damage and healing output. Her new passive, Conspirator, reveals enemies whose ultimates are fully charged.

The rest of the kit moved with the role change. Machine Pistol damage per projectile dropped from 8 to 7, minimum falloff distance rose from 15 meters to 20, and spread now reaches its maximum after 10 shots instead of 6. EMP costs 67.5 percent more and its damage fell from 25 percent of current health to 20. Translocator holds stealth for 6.5 seconds instead of 5, takes longer to enter stealth, and throws a shorter distance. Sombra also needs 67 percent more experience for her minor perk and 69.5 percent more for her major perk.

Roadhog keeps Chain Hook but drops his secondary fire

Roadhog's Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley with a stronger projectile in the center of each shot. Ammo went from 6 to 12, and total damage per volley rose from 175 to 204, but the critical damage multiplier fell from 2x to 1.5x and each volley carries 16 pellets instead of 25.

The secondary fire is gone, replaced by Trash Compactor. Roadhog absorbs projectiles in front of him for two seconds, then fires an explosive shot whose damage scales with what he absorbed, between 75 and 200. The cooldown is 10 seconds in 5v5 and 11 in 6v6.

Chain Hook is less lethal on its own, which is the stated goal of the rework. The stun after a pull dropped from 0.4 seconds to 0.3, and the target now lands 4.5 meters away instead of 3, so the hook displaces rather than setting up an immediate kill. It also returns faster, at 6 seconds in 5v5 instead of 7. Take a Breather lasts 2 seconds instead of 3, heals 200 per second instead of 150, and reduces 35 percent of damage instead of 40.

Generic amber projectiles meet a barrier and a teal burst travels back outward beneath the words SECONDARY FIRE and TRASH COMPACTOR.
Blizzard's October 6 patch notes remove Scrap Gun Secondary Fire and assign Trash Compactor to that slot by default. The generic diagram represents projectile absorption and return, without balance numbers or a game interface.

Hitscan projectiles shrank for every hero

Large hitscan projectiles went from 0.07 meters to 0.04, and small ones from 0.04 to 0.02. The developer comment explains that a broad pass on hero hit volumes had smoothed out hit detection inconsistencies, so projectile sizes came down to keep effectiveness at a similar level.

That hit volume pass lists 34 heroes, and it does not move them in one direction. Cassidy's torso shrank from 37 to 33 and Reinhardt's shoulder from 40 to 35, while Lifeweaver's torso grew from 19.7 to 25, Wrecking Ball's head from 22 to 25, and Kiriko's torso from 17.7 to 21. Blizzard says the intent is more consistent aiming on average, and that the change should not feel very different to play.

Grímsvötn and the Halloween map rotation

Grímsvötn is the new Escort map, set in an Icelandic volcanic fissure. Blizzard describes it as the first new Escort map in years. In the fiction it began as an Overwatch watchpoint, later came under Helix control, and held some of the world's most dangerous prisoners, Doomfist among them. It is also where Doctrine was locked up before Doomfist broke him out.

Halloween versions of Hollywood, Lijang Tower and Château Guillard are in all queues through November 3.

Death becomes an upgrade in Graveyard Games

Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games runs from October 6 to November 2. It is 5v5 open queue with a guaranteed 1-2-2 role composition and best-of-three Control. You are assigned a random role and given three hero choices, then earn levels from passive experience, eliminations and assists. Every death converts those levels into Power choices from the Common, Epic and Legendary tiers, and you respawn with overhealth equal to 40 percent of maximum life plus 30 percent move speed while out of combat. Dying also grants 10 percent ultimate charge.

Offerings earned from challenges decide which of Ashe, Moira or Winston is summoned next. By the final week all three are in the mode, and the playable roster grows to 20 heroes. The patch notes heading for the event reads "Mystery Mayhem: Graveyard Games" while the announcement and the arcade section call it Mystery Madness, so the two documents disagree on the name.

Unvaulted passes and the rest of the season calendar

Battle Passes from Seasons 1 to 15 are back as Unvaulted Passes. Progress you already made carries over, including progress on the free track, and you can run one Unvaulted Pass alongside the current season's pass. Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles and Mythic hero and weapon skins are excluded. The 2026 Season 4 pass arrives at midseason rather than at launch.

The Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collaboration runs October 6 to 19, the Tech Witches collection runs October 9 to 26, and Team Drives return October 29 to November 1.

What the patch notes leave open

Neither document gives an end date for Season 5. Balance after a support conversion this large is the part nobody can call in advance, and the developer comments only promise that the team will keep watching how projectile consistency behaves. Blizzard has not said what it will change if Sombra's win rate settles far from the other supports.
