South Africa turned a difficult start into a first-innings declaration on day three, reaching 425 for 9 after slipping to 97 for 5 against Australia in Gqeberha. Temba Bavuma anchored the recovery with a career-best 179 from 334 balls, as the ICC match report records.

Bavuma hit 18 fours and one six. Marco Jansen added 85 and Simon Harmer made 82 as South Africa built its total and then declared. The same ICC report says Scott Boland took five wickets for Australia.

Australia began its reply late in the day and finished on 3 for 1 after Kagiso Rabada took Nic Maddinson in his first over. That leaves the second Test in progress. South Africa had gained a strong position through Bavuma’s innings and the later contributions, but the day’s play did not decide the match.
