In its 16:03 HKT bulletin on October 21, the Hong Kong Observatory listed Super Typhoon Champi at 18.7°N, 128.9°E at 14:00 HKT, about 1,590 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong. For that same observation time, HKO listed maximum sustained winds near the centre at 240 km/h.

The position is an observation; the route is a forecast

HKO said Champi would move across the western North Pacific toward the seas east of Taiwan over the next couple of days. Its table forecast the storm at 20.8°N, 125.6°E with 205 km/h winds at 14:00 HKT on October 22, and at 23.8°N, 123.4°E with 155 km/h winds at 14:00 HKT on October 23. Those are forecast positions and intensities, not observations.

The same bulletin warns that forecast-position error grows with time and short-term track departures can occur. Use HKO’s live bulletin for newer position and intensity updates.
