What Is Pet Shop Boys’ A Man from the Future? The Alan Turing Album Explained
Pet Shop Boys’ October release revises their 2014 Proms work into a standalone eight-part recording about Alan Turing. Compare the earlier concert, tracklist, narration and BBC listening route.

Pet Shop Boys released A Man from the Future on October 9 as an eight-part musical work about Alan Turing, according to the official release notice. The 2026 recording pairs the duo with the Manchester Camerata Octet and uses narration by Juliet Stevenson. The official release credits Sven Helbig for string arrangements and production, and Maarten Vos for additional production, programming and synthesizers.
How the 2026 recording differs from the 2014 work
Pet Shop Boys first presented A Man From The Future at the BBC Proms in 2014. Their original announcement described a three-part evening at the Royal Albert Hall on July 23. It began with Richard Niles’ “Overture to Performance,” continued with orchestral arrangements of Pet Shop Boys songs by film composer Angelo Badalamenti, then ended with the new Turing work for orchestra, choir, electronics and narrator. The text drew on Andrew Hodges’ biography Alan Turing: The Enigma. The 2014 announcement names Tennant and Lowe as creators and says they wanted the commission to mark 60 years since Turing’s death.
The 2026 release is a revised recording of that final work, not a recording of the whole three-part concert. A BBC Proms program listing for a later 2014 broadcast names Juliet Stevenson as narrator, Chrissie Hynde as singer and the BBC Singers and BBC Concert Orchestra. The April announcement had left the narrator unconfirmed; the later listing identifies Stevenson. The 2026 recording credits her again and uses the Manchester Camerata Octet instead of that orchestra-and-choir lineup. Pet Shop Boys call the recording revised and updated but do not publish a passage-by-passage comparison. The 2014 announcement calls the Proms performance the world premiere; the BBC listing names Dominic Wheeler as conductor. The 2026 release packages the work as a standalone album.

What the eight sections cover
The official track list is:
- “Natural wonders every child should know”
- “He dreamed of machines”
- “The Enigma”
- “Other ranks”
- “The memory and the control”
- “The trial”
- “Only in his death”
- “A man from the future”
The titles suggest a movement from curiosity and machines to codebreaking, trial and death. That is a reading of the sequence, not a claim that the record is a complete biography. Bletchley Park’s short biography of Turing says he joined its Enigma research section and designed the Bombe to help break Enigma-encoded messages. It also records his later work on ACE, an early computer. Those details place the track titles in context.
Where listeners can hear it
The new album is available digitally, on CD and on vinyl through Parlophone. On October 4, BBC Radio 6 Music played the full work ahead of release and aired a conversation with Tennant and Lowe about Turing, Kraftwerk and the Beatles. Pet Shop Boys link the broadcast through BBC Sounds. Archive availability can change.
The band also held a pre-release playback at the Imperial War Museum in Manchester on October 8; its release note does not link a recording of the event. That playback and the BBC radio premiere were separate events. One listener in an October 4 r/petshopboys discussion said they expected less narration, then found the story woven through the music worked well. The release lists the eight titles but does not provide track durations or a section-by-section synopsis.
