Hurkacz Beats Djokovic in Shanghai for First Win in Nine Meetings
Hubert Hurkacz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in 87 minutes at the Shanghai Masters, ending an 0-8 run in their head-to-head.

Hubert Hurkacz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in 87 minutes in the second round of the Shanghai Masters on October 9. The straight-sets score was notable for a reason beyond the draw: it was Hurkacz’s first win in nine meetings with Djokovic. The official tournament recap describes a big-serving performance and steady baseline exchanges, giving the result a clearer shape than the word upset alone.
The head-to-head changed
Before Friday, Hurkacz had not beaten Djokovic in any of their eight previous meetings. He got the breakthrough in Shanghai, where the tournament record shows he won the first set 6-4 and closed the match 6-3.
The win leaves Hurkacz 1-8 against Djokovic after nine matches. It is his first victory over one of the sport’s most successful players, at an event where he already has a title.
The match statistics help show how he got there. Hurkacz won 82 percent of his first-serve points, 36 of 44, according to Infosys ATP Stats. He also saved two break points in the third game and was largely in control after holding. That offers a concrete measure behind the tournament’s description of a big-serving performance.

Why Shanghai was a fitting setting
Hurkacz won the Shanghai title in 2023. The official event account notes that 2026 was his first appearance there since lifting that trophy, so the win came at a venue associated with one of his strongest earlier results. That context does not explain the match by itself, but it makes this second-round result more meaningful than a routine step through the draw.
The tournament recap characterized Hurkacz’s game as a typically strong serving performance, while also noting that he matched Djokovic from the baseline. The report describes Hurkacz as maintaining enough quality in the longer exchanges to keep the pressure on across both sets.
The result also put him in a small, source-defined group: the tournament said he became the fourth player with at least one hard-court win against Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic, after Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev. That was the angle behind some of the match discussion, and it is a separate achievement from the nine-meeting head-to-head record. The official report also counted it as Hurkacz’s eighth straight win in Shanghai.
Djokovic’s schedule is context, not a diagnosis
Djokovic arrived in Shanghai after winning Beijing and was playing his sixth match in ten days. The official recap included that short turnaround when describing the match. It is reasonable context for the workload he had carried, but it is not proof that fatigue caused the loss. The result itself remains the firm evidence: Hurkacz won in straight sets, and Djokovic was eliminated in the second round.
Hurkacz was 29 and a former Shanghai champion at the time of the match; Djokovic was the former world No. 1. Those labels explain why the pairing attracted attention, but the most useful number is still the one attached to their history: nine meetings before Hurkacz got his first win. This result is not a forecast for the rest of the tournament.
